Make the classroom a place wherein all students
meet with success and a place where both
teachers and students want to be.
You are now entering the Total Positive Energy Zone!
Those are the words posted on the door of my classroom, and within the classroom are the three simple rules that lead to a highly successful learning environment!
Positive Interaction: Focus on the positive traits of each of your classmates. Speak kindly at all times. Be patient, encouraging and supportive of each other. Realize that each individual success contributes to the success of all.
Positive Effort: Set high expectations. Stay committed to mastering the learning targets. Be willing to accept help from your teacher and from your classmates. Always be an active problem solver. Use all available resources to create the knowledge you need to achieve success. (Actions)
Positive Attitude: Have an “I can” attitude. Never say “can’t”, instead say, “not yet able.” Be an enthusiastic learner. Your job is to learn all that you can. If you choose to look at your daily routine positively, you will be open to learning productively. Aim to make learning a lifelong habit. (Feelings)Read more…
Move beyond bully-free!
A Family of Learners is absolutely a bully-free zone, but it is also so much more! Students gain the confidence that they will never be picked on or put down in The Total Positive Energy Zone. They also have the important added benefit of being well supported and encouraged by all of their classmates.
Nobody can convince me that there is such a thing as a bad kid! There are tough kids. There are bullies. Even these children, the most difficult ones, are not truly bad children. These are children that have been hurt. They’ve learned to protect themselves by creating a sense of fear in others. They are driven by the premise that if they build a reputation of being the meanest or the toughest kids, it will keep others from bullying them.
Once these students witness that the classroom is a completely safe environment, an environment in which all members view each other positively, their tough exteriors will melt away leaving little or no evidence that they ever existed. I have had the incredible joy of witnessing these previously tough students transform incredibly quickly. Many of them even become adept at coaching their classmates to stay positive.Read more…
Build a Family of Learners!
Confidence and achievement go hand in hand!
Investing the time to build a family of learners in your classroom will result in an environment that both you and your students are happy to enter each day. More impressive is the fact that you will still have a bounce in your step when you leave school at the end of the day.
The classroom will become a place wherein all students meet with success resulting from the fact that they are willing to accept challenges and make mistakes. They will all be supported and encouraged by each other. Once students gain the confidence that they will never be ridiculed or made fun of within their family of learners, they are motivated to reach toward rigorous learning targets. They no longer fear making mistakes or fumbling on their way to mastery.Read more…
