Confidence and Achievement Go Hand in Hand
Investing the time to build a family of learners in your classroom will result in an environment that both you and your students are happy to enter each day. More impressive is the fact that you will still have a bounce in your step when you leave school at the end of the day. The classroom will become a place wherein all students meet with success resulting from the fact that they are willing to accept challenges and make mistakes. They will all be supported and encouraged by each other. Once students gain the confidence that they will never be ridiculed or made fun of within their family of learners, they are motivated to reach toward rigorous learning targets. They no longer fear making mistakes or fumbling on their way to mastery.
No NFL draft pick was a super star the first time he showed up to practice in the pee-wee league. He fumbled the ball, ran the wrong play, and misjudged many throws. Because of his love for the game, and support of his coach and teammates, he stuck with it! Determined practice leads to high level achievement for those that are willing to accept the bumps and bruises as necessary steps on the path to success!
The same holds true for academic triumph. Students need to be willing to take risks. They need the courage to try new tasks and reach for rigorous learning targets with the comfort of knowing that, if at first they don’t succeed, they will be supported and encouraged by their teacher and their peers. I promise that you can create this type of courage and motivation in your students by creating a classroom that is A Total Positive Energy Zone.
